Metro Police nab shooting suspect

The City’s enforcement agencies made 373 arrests in the past week – at approximately 21:00 last night, Metro Police officers came upon an incident that resulted in the death of a security guard.
Metro Police officers were driving along Malibongwe Drive when they came across the scene.
A 45-year-old motorist had apparently crashed his vehicle, and when approached by a security guard, he tried to get away.
When the security guard gave chase, the suspect shot him.
He was found between the reeds by Metro Police officers, and surrendered.
The Eye in the Sky too was dispatched to the scene.
Metro Police Officers handed over the suspect to SAPS, as well as a Glock 9mm pistol registered in his name.
Meanwhile, just over an hour later in the CBD, Law Enforcement officers arrested a suspect for the possession of an illegal firearm.
‘This incident escalated quickly, with devastating consequences. The recent crime statistics showed that firearms were used in 55% of all murders in the Western Cape between July and September. We speak very often about the scourge of illegal firearms and the damage that they inflict in the wrong hands. In fact, just over an hour after this incident, our Law Enforcement officers recovered an illegal firearm in the CBD. That said, even persons who carry firearms legally have a duty to handle their weapons responsibly,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In general enforcement, Metro Police officers made 51 arrests and issued 2 978 traffic and by-law fines.
Their Law Enforcement counterparts made 274 arrests and issued 16 745 fines for various by-law offences.
On the roads, Traffic officers recorded 52 669 offences, impounded 289 public transport vehicles and executed 1 527 warrants of arrest.
They arrested 48 suspects – 25 for driving under the influence, 11 for reckless and negligent driving and 12 for various other charges.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 629 incidents this past weekend, including 83 fires, 132 cases of assault, 215 noise nuisance calls, 49 domestic violence incidents, and 72 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
